The US is the DR's greatest trade partner and consumer. | Tobacco is a very important export product in the DR. The tobacco fields are mainly worked by Haitian immigrants. One of the biggest tobacco companies is called Tabacalera A. Fuente, owned by Carlos Fuente Sr. and Carlos Fuente Jr. | Rum is a major export product in the DR. Major national rum brands include Brugal,Bermudez and Barcelo.Rum is mainly produced in the cities of Puerto Plata and Santiago, because of their vast, fertile valleys. | Coffee is also produced in the DR. | Mangu is a food eaten in the DR. It is made from platains and various spices. It is served with fried onions and fried salami. Other foods made from platains include mofongo and mariquitas. | Sancocho is a very elaborated and time-consuming soup made in the DR. It consists of a watery soup that includes chicken, casaba, corn, platains, and potatoes. It can be eaten alone or with white rice. | Moros are very common in the DR. They are made by combining white rice and beans. The most popular beans used to make moros are red beans, black beans, and green peas. | Mofongo is an extremely salty plate. It is made up of boiled platains and pork meat. The platain is made into mangu and the pork meat is fried. After the meat is fried, it is called "chicharron." | The traditional plate, nicknamed "La Bandera Dominicana" or "The Flag Food," consists of rice, red beans, and meat.
